The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has launched a campaign to help people spot risky deals on online marketplaces and make a few quick checks before buying. FOLO-UP builds on the same idea and adds deeper recall checking.
Before you buy, OPSS suggests simple checks such as:
- Look up the seller’s name and where they are based, not just the marketplace brand.
- Read detailed reviews that mention safety and build quality, not only the star rating.
- Check the description for clear instructions, safety warnings and markings (for example UKCA or CE), plus information about materials.
- See if the product appears in any official recall by searching “product recalls” on GOV.UK.

Christmas gift safety checklist
- Is the product clearly age marked and suitable for the person you are buying for?
- Does the listing show clear safety markings or standards (for example, BS EN or UKCA / CE)?
- Does the brand or seller look genuine and established, not just a random name?
- Are the reviews consistent and free from repeated safety complaints?
- Is the price realistic, or does it look too good to be true?
